Divergent by: Veronica Roth description:
In Beatrice Prior’s dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue–Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is–she can’t have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.
During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are–and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she’s chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she’s kept hidden from everyone because she’s been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . . . or it might destroy her.
BOOK 1: Divergent 5 STARS
I was recommended this book because I read the Hunger Games but I have to say this book was 10 times better than the Hunger Games… It of course is a dystopia but where some appear perfect on the top but turn corrupt beneath and others are just so obviously messed up, as the Hunger Games were, this book had a government that, although drastically different than any today, was working… it had flaws like any other government and it seemed that those there knew it but were just doing the best they could to keep their world at peace… apparently after too many wars they created 5 factions who each sought to keep peace in their own way… and in some ways they were just the different personalities of the world and I think that’s what made this story more believable than others… if given the chance I can see people breaking off into these groups… If you are honest to a fault and tell it like it is then you would be Candor… if you are peace loving and seek only happiness you would be Amity… if you think knowledge is power and the more you know the better off you are then you would be Erudite… if you are selfless and put all others wants before your own then you would be Abnegation… and if you are fearless and believe in fighting for your freedom then you are Dauntless… but the thing is that many would be several of these factions but in this world you can only choose one… it is so serious that your faction comes before your own family and while this world was working in many ways the problem is that any system that tries to keep such a rigid hold on its people will eventually begin to crack as those who want more power will seek it no matter what and those who can’t be contained will become Divergent and then all hell will break loose… and you’ll enjoy every page of it…
