Reading is Reading is Reading…

Against YA

Read whatever you want. But you should feel embarrassed when what you’re reading was written for children.

and this is the problem with some people out there… and more than just on the issue of what someone should read… in the article the writer says “But I remember, when I was a young adult, being desperate to earn my way into the adult stacks; I wouldn’t have wanted to live in a world where all the adults were camped out in mine.” I’m sorry… but I recall as a teenager reading stuff from a variety of genres and not just YA… in fact as a teen I read more mature books then than I do now… I loved Val McDermid and Raymond Chandler… I still like them but it’s rare for me to read such books now… I go through my fazes… but this person is implying that only at certain ages should we read certain books… and I will say that some books are too mature for really young kids… after all I don’t think anyone under the age of 18 should read the 50 Shades of Grey series… or any like that… it’s just one of those things… not to say that McDermid might have been a bit more hard core than I should’ve being reading when I was younger but hey… us kids we do crazy things…

“But mature readers also find satisfaction of a more intricate kind in stories that confound and discomfit, and in reading about people with whom they can’t empathize at all.” Well I’m glad to know that all of us mature readers can be easily dumped into a single category there… geez I wasn’t aware of this about me, but now that I know… well YA how could I have ever loved you? oh yeah… that’s right… because I like what I like so you can suck it… I know not very mature of me… but apparently my reading choice has already proven that… but my main problem with this is the fact that I know so many people who can count on 1 hand how many books they’ve read in their life time… and at least 4 of those are ones they were required to for school… I say any book that has people going to the library or the book store is a book worth reading… those YA books this person is cutting down as not even worth a 2nd thought… like Twilight and Divergent… are books that have gotten more people reading than probably whatever they consider great literature… and I’ve had to read some of that “great literature”… and while it’s not bad… is it really so great if it feels like a chore to get through it… and when you’re done you can only think of all the things you would’ve rather been doing… like having a root canal… or reading this God awful article again…

I just hate people who think that their reading choices some how make them this intelligent and mature person… I currently have The Divine Comedy by Dante right next to Bitterblue by Kristin Cashore… because a book is a book… and reading regularly helps your comprehension levels in taking tests and learning in general… and no where in the studies that proved this did it say that Charles Dickens helped you more than Stephenie Meyer… so if you want to read YA, you read that YA like there is no tomorrow… and you be happy 😀
